To Sheik Taj el-Dene Elhilaly, spiritual
guide for Islam in Austrailian communities.
Praise be to God, the Merciful One. May He lighten the burden of
understanding anything at all, for a change.
It's not who deserves to own Australia, it's how you would run
the country, if you were entitled to look after more than a
couple of suburbs every now and then.
As to what a convict might be, it comes down to an
attitude—just as age is a state of mind. The great prophets
of history gave us all the freedom we know, yet most were kept in
chains, never free to make a move; this makes them great.
All traditional wisdom from every culture agrees and Allah is
compassionate where ignorance cannot be prevented:
No one is free for not being in a
prison.
A man is not free nor too bright if
he goes about town calling another fellow a convict, while the
one who is being called names is actually carrying the other on
his shoulders.
It is not a sign of mental substance to be ferried across the
river by St Christopher while imagining that the bloke who is
doing the walking is not feeling the weight, because the water
cuts it down.
Also, a tight mind will harden the heart, and then one grows
oblivious to essentials: The first principle of Australian
Solidarity consists in...
